Meanwhile, as a by the by, Heng Shan is primarily a Taoist site. One of the Eight Immortals, Zhang Guo Lao 张果老, was said to have meditated here. The statue of Zhang Guo Lao takes a prominent place at the mid-point car park of Heng Shan.

I have been procrastinating. I have been back from XiAn since November 2014, and I had not filtered through my photos for the ones related to Chong Yang Gong 重阳宫 - my excuse is that I took so many pictures, it was a daunting task to look through them and select the ones suitable for this Chong Yang Gong topic. Well, it is Saturday and I do not have a date, so I sat my ass down and did some work. Enjoy... The front entrance of Chong Yang Gong. Since it was the 9th day of the intercalary 9th month of the year, entrance was free. The layout of the temple. Yes, there is, and the tomb is on the top left corner in the map (marked by a yellow spot).

This is the design on the carpet before the altar to Wang Chong Yang. It is a very interesting design. Immediately recognisable is, of course the Eight Trigram. Surrounding the Taiji symbol are the four creatures representing the four cardinal points - Xuan Wu 玄武 , the Serpent-Tortoise (North), Zhu Que 朱雀 Scarlet Bird (South), Qing Long 青龍 Green Dragon (East) and Bai Hu 白虎 White Tiger (West). The words along the edges of the carpet are the names of the 28 Chinese Celestial Constellation.

I saw some interesting sights around the Chong Yang Palace. Taoist scribes busy at work On the lintels are "inspirational drawings" of stories told by our ancestors to mentally torture us... e.g. From the book of 24 exemplary acts of piety - In Winter, the unwell mother wanted to eat bamboo shoots, so the son cried in the bamboo grove and his tears so moved the bamboo that it sprouted before SpringFilial son personally administers medicine to the sick mother ... so this is what that is expected of us... Sigh. I will not be doing the crying, we have canned bamboo shoots. And she should not be taking bamboo shoots when unwell. Too "han liang" 寒凉 (I think) - chills the humours, leads to coughs and aching joints. As for the medicines, pills, drips and injections work quite well indeed, thank you.

chefying just... make her an extra batch of cookies. loving the pics! Thanks @suiyiu. I shall be posting close-ups of the manifesto. I am too lazy to translate it - maybe I will do it later, or maybe someone whose command of Chinese is better than mine can do the job. I took the picture of the purpose/meaning behind the burning of incense but I have not read it yet! I very much prefer to take a picture of it, then come home and read the contents with the help of my trusty dictionary.

The why's and wherefore's of lighting a stick of incense [/div] [/quote] I had a quick read on the incense burning. Briefly, it said that the practice of burning of incense had been around for a long time. Stemming from the belief that the Gods exist above humans, fumes from the fire rise to reach them. The six main reasons for lighting incense are:- 1) As offerings to the Gods. 2) As conduit of prayers to the Gods 3) To act as a beacon to the lost souls 4) To purify the body 5) Dispel evil 6) To wish someone well (equivalent to the Catholics lighting a candle for someone)
