On LOCH themesong lyrics.
My favourite is none other than 誰是大英雄 (Who's Hero). Which other lyrics can be so close to the story? James Wong even add the martial art skill names inside. I listen to this song many times and never got tired of it.
Comparing 誰是大英雄 and 鐵血丹心 (Warring Loyalties), one can see the changes in James Wong's approach in writing lyrics. In 誰是大英雄, his approach is more similar to Lo Kwok Jim in that in stick to the plot. The lyrics of 誰是大英雄 is really about Guo Jing and world of LOCH. 鐵血丹心 is like the HDSD86 themesong, it hardly connect to the LOCH story. 劍伴誰在 at least talk about wulin, sword, hero, but, 鐵血丹心 is just all about love. Even less related to wuxia. That's why I don't like it as a wuxia themesong.
Lyrics wise, my 3 top favourite is 誰是大英雄, 天地都在我心中,英雄寞.
The 天地都在我心中 and 英雄寞 lyrics is very poetic and the words are beautiful. The meaning is also quite related to the series.

@caiyi agreed that as his lyrical style matured, he went away from the plot-specific. i'm kind of on the fence about whether this is a good thing or not. certainly, plot-specific lyrics are more connected to the source material, but at the same time, it doesn't really have a life and a lasting appeal as a less specific piece--for example, if you look at his lyrics for 家變 (知否世事常變 變幻原是永恆), it has a broader theme and are also very meaningful, just not necessarily solely related to the one story. no question that 誰是大英雄 is most plot-specific, though.  i can't decide on my fave lyrics of the ones i found. |

and since we're talking about plot-specific lyrics, this is one of the ultimate ones. lo kwok tsim has had such a (for him) gratifying response to this work from the overseas chinese who were shipped out of china to be coolies. and they are fantastic lyrics. he said in interview that, obviously, he hasn't had that experience but read and heard enough about it to understand the horrors of that hard life.

Is the lyrics of 家變 not related to the series? I've never seen 家變 so, I don't know the plot. But, based on the title which mean changes in a family, I thought the lyrics was appropriate. Lyrics don't have to be strictly plot specific, but, make it at least a bit related to the series. That's why I like the lyrics HSDS86 themesong but not the LOCH83's. HSDS is not plot specific, but, it contains all the elements in a wuxia story. The LOCH83 is just all about romance (more specific, romance in a dessert)，and not even GJ/HR remance, or YK/MNC romance. The following lines applied to neither romance. 女：依稀往夢似曾見 心內波瀾現 男：拋開世事斷愁怨 合：相伴到天邊 I have no problem with the romance filled lyrics of ROCH since ROCH is romance-centered. Damn, just checked. ROCH is not written by James Wong  . It's written by Tang Wai Hung (鄧偉雄). Finally, a series that let him write all the romance he wants, and he didn't participate. I guess he was not free at that time. |

@caiyi i haven't seen the series either--here's a synopsis. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_House_Is_Not_a_Home_(TV_series) based on the blurp, the lyrics are broader thematically than the plot suggests. regarding LOCH83, there are actually 3 themesongs because it was made in three parts; already, the 1st themesong is the least romance-heavy. but agree that the focus is too much on the romance while ignoring other elements of the story. and LOL re: james wong missing out on the chance to write ROCH. well, he couldn't have the monopoly on tvb wuxia themesongs.  plus it's possible he was otherwise occupied. |

@galvatron sam hui's song was a deliberate parody of the theme song and not the other way around. the theme song was a huge hit, and even those who weren't following the tv series while it was being broadcasted knew it because it played on the radio. sam hui's parody was partially a response to the popularity. What about the theme song of ROCH 1976? Is almost same as 誰是大英雄 ,the theme song of LOCH 1976 ,am i right? How do ths song compare to other version of ROCH LIKE 1983,1995 etc? Which is more Xia? |

I'm currently trying to memorise this lyrics and I find it very difficult because no stanza is alike. Even though there are some repeated lines in the whole lyrics, in every stanza, there are bound to be new lines. So, it's unlike the usual style where you just repeat the same words in the chorus part. This is the second hardest lyrics I have to memorise after '天梯' (Stairway to Heaven). I also have the same difficulty with 天梯. Too many different words.
I wonder if this is a new trend in lyrics writing.

The lyricist must be very good at literary stuff or maybe the terms just rare for someone who didn't study proper chinese in school. i stopped following cantopop for over ten years, so i can't say whether this is a new trend. i definitely know that the younger lyricists like to cram as many words as possible into a song, which makes it a mouthful. for example, the very popular movie themesong for Young and Dangerous 友情歲月 could be at least 1/5 shorter in wordcount. (and if you're interested, i can show you how.) it was pointed out by one of the prominent lyricists--cheng kwok kong, i think--that the younger generation of lyricist purposely chose to use more difficult terms/words. because they could. i sincerely doubt this was because the entire population's education level just went up. and i think in that same interview, the host also complained about how difficult it is to learn the lyrics of any of the newer songs--if you don't have a prompter, it's impossible. also, despite the harder words, the pictures painted are hardly more beautiful. the songs are more like architectural constructions than works of art. so, getting back to the topic of whether i like the lyrics of 獨一無二, the simple answer is NO. for several reasons: [1] for such a soothing melody, there are too many words [2] the words don't flow, there's no rhythm to them (and i don't even mean the lack of rhyme scheme) [3] the difficult terms don't add impact or elegance to the story--they are just difficult words placed there to prove that the lyricist knows them [4] the rest of the words do not paint a particularly interesting story; the theme is about as mundane as it gets [5] there is a dissociation between the title and the lyrics--nothing in the lyrics explain why the lover is unique (that's what 獨一無二 means, right?) for me, a pop song needs to be memorable and easy to sing. i'm not looking for a mahler symphony or a rachmaninoff concerto. |
