kyc hatred is overall too strong a word, i agree. but what about the other aspects of misogyny, of contempt and prejudice? reduction, dismissal, and objectification definitely fall under the latter meaning. as you put it, gender inequality, that's what those are: ways where women are not treated as equally capable, as humans with flaws.
GL will not enter the discussion because the misogyny is blatant.
but for the "worship of women" that JY claims. firstly, as aforementioned: objectification. yes, XLN doesn't grow old. she also got raped. the "all the girls fall for the hero" trope very much condoned. cheng ying and lu wuxiang stay unmarried, pining for yang guo; guo xiang pines for yang guo so much, she becomes a nun. duan yu's mother hated her husband's womanizing ways, but when it comes to her son, she encourages him: "you like all of your adopted father's daughters? okay, marry them all!" wen yi and stockholm syndrome. yang buhui admonishes her father for seducing her mother, but then self-sacrifices to "right the wrong" by taking up with her mother's spurned fiance who is most definitely old enough to be her father.
as for the evil women, it seems only the bitter crone that heads e'mei is power-hungry and ruthless, but who knows if she, like the founder of e'mei, didn't get scorned by love that turned her into a villain. mei chaofeng and li mochou most definitely became embittered because of men: the former becoming widowed and the latter losing her man to another woman.
wei xiaobao will note enter the discussion because he was purposely written to be an anti-hero. the question is why define an anti-hero thusly.
LYS has created strong women, but what of their fates? li shengnan couldn't have the man's heart, so she kills herself, and in the process, also denying another woman from having said man, who isn't a sunshine and rainbows type of hero in any case. lian nichang is one of the strongest LYS creations, yet she falls for a spineless fuddy-duddy who breaks her heart and causes her to withdraw from society in despair.
WDL's yu xiulian must pine for li mubai because he "respects" her too much to be her lover.
does knowing there's misogyny inherent in wuxia mean i hate wuxia and can't enjoy it? obviously not, or i wouldn't be on this forum. but i'm cognizant of certain flaws and perpetuated tropes that prejudice against women and minorities. i accept them as part of the wuxia universe but it doesn't mean i condone it.
(posted by siuyiu ) --- I continue this discussion here as I don't want to hijack the other thread. It's a bit off-topic there. As I said before, I have problems with JY's depiction of women and relationships for a long time, it's not like I cannot understand your unhappiness with that part of him. I can say even more about that, but I don't want to, because it will turn many people off. It's always a personal thing and I don't want to cloud or color anyone's opinions. As for LYS, I must defend him. Plenty of women in LYS get their men--Li Shengnan and Lian Nichang are two exceptions. For Lian Nichang, in all fairness the problem does not lie with Zhuo Yihang alone. LYS pretty well knows that Lian Nichang is an extremist, in spite of all his compassion for her. Of course what Zhuo Yihang did is to many unforgivable, but at least he never flirts with another girl. I do see him growing up after that Wudang episode where he was really spineless. Maybe it's too late. He did die atoning for his misdeed anyway. As for Li Shengnan, she really is another extreme. Her whole life revolves around finding the manual and reviving the Li family's reputation, killing Meng Shengtong her arch-enemy. That she falls for Jin Shiyi gives her a ray of hope, but because of her unorthodox way of showing love and concern, Jin Shiyi never really understands her. So it's true she kind of "commits suicide". But Jin Shiyi still marries Gu Zhihua after her death. LYS said he wasn't happy about writing this, but since their son becomes the hero of another novel, he had no way to revise that. There are many happy marriages in LYS: the Glacier Maiden, Yu Chengzhu, Yun Lei, Tantai Jingming (who marries that very nice guy, Yun Chong), to name just a few. Many relationships don't work out, but isn't life like that sometimes? Better that than giving a varnished view of life. As for Li Mubai... forget it. But it's Li Mubai you don't like and not Wang Dulu, right? WDL doesn't seem to like Mr. Li much either.

kyc thanks for sharing your thoughts! by no means do i think all the stories are problematic when it comes to misogyny, and obviously majority are happy endings. just pointing out the society attitudes that bleed into novels that can go unnoticed. readers are allowed their own reactions and judgement of stories, and i wouldn't dare tell them not to read something. i still read GL and laugh at the antics of LXF, for example. but passive reading and passive acceptance of certain social norms has not ended well in terms of equality based on merit, so i'm hoping everyone be more aware. if you wish to share your thoughts on JY, please do--i think if you forewarn, people are free to skip if they aren't interested. but only if you feel comfortable doing so.

Okay then, here goes. RANT ALERT. Some things I don't like about Master JY. I cannot stand JY's unending string of women who die for or because of men. None of them ever blames the men no matter how cruelly they are treated or killed (see Princess Fragrance, Ma Chunhua, Ji Xiaofu, Yue Lingshan etc.). Sometimes when they die or commit suicide, it gets absurd. Mrs. Hu Yidao does not have to commit suicide: she has a two-month-old baby to take care of, she simply throws the baby boy to her husband's alleged murderer and be lazy a bit? Surely JY can find better ways for her to die? These are not two or three isolated cases; there are more than a dozen women who commit suicide or get themselves killed over men--a recurrent trope of JY. After they die, they become some martyr or Madonna of love, with a halo around their heads. JY will gush/hint over and over again how lovable/noble they are because they die for their men, like he has some fetish over such women. Another thing I cannot stand is JY women declaring spinsterhood after falling for a man they cannot be with. Most of these occur in ROCH (Guo Xiang, Lu Wushuang, Cheng Ying), but there are others like Huo Qingtong, Li Wenxiu, Zhou Zhiruo etc. JY cannot tolerate women who like one man and give him up for another. Why should Ji Xiaofu not marry Yin Liting even after she got raped? It's not her fault and why is Ms. Ji condoning Yang Xiao's rape/seduction? But no, to JY of course this will destroy Ji Xiaofu's sanctity, liking another man after she is taken. So only Yang Buhui can do the honors. Also JY sometimes writes silly lines for women. I'm reading The Duke and the Cauldron right now (distracted many times, only 2/5 into the book, taking a long break). Fang Yi can actually say to Wei Xiaobao: "If you save so-and-so (i.e. my boyfriend), I will most willingly accept it if you sell me to a brothel." Not to mention silly plotlines like Xu Zhu in three-night stands with Miss Xixia Universe and still manages to marry her (he never sees her face but for sure she's going to be one of the most beautiful women in the world.) Compare JY's treatment of women to LYS's. In my third LYS, there is already a guy who dies for his girl (Han Zhibang for Liu Yufang. Technically he dies for Ling Weifeng, but it's entirely because of Liu Yufang). Yu Chengzhu can jilt one guy for another. LYS presents revisionist portrayals of Wu Zetian and Shangguan Wan'er. LYS women are often on a par in kungfu with their men. Also, if you're a nice butcher, LYS will find a wife for you. Not every woman is reserved for one man. It's kind of liberating not just for women and also men, because I don't like seeing women dying at all. I'm not Yang Guo of course, but it puts enormous pressure on certain men because a life is precious and why must you kill yourself to get enshrined in some chastity memorial? I don't want to stop anyone from liking JY, just be aware some readers have major issues over his depiction of women and relationships. RANT OVER.

kyc thanks for sharing your thoughts! i wonder if the "yong-ology" lectures will do proper lit analysis, pointing out both the laudable and problematic aspects of JY's works. or if it's just one big "fangirling" study. there's also the concern that the availability of numerous adaptations plus an English translation of LOCH will skew non-chinese readers'/audience's perceptions of wuxia genre fiction. again, this isn't i-hate-JY, but, as you say, we need to be aware of the problems.

Since some people already began talking about their dislikes in Jin Yong's novels,I guess I'll do the same about something I kept in my heart for a long time
While people(I believe) view The Deer and the Cauldron as the ultimate "king novel" of misogyny, I would say that man-hate was never depicted as explicitly and clearly in that novel. And for this very reason, JY ceased to be my favourite wuxia writer. If you don't know what I'm talking about, let me tell you. It was Wu Yingxiong's castration. In Smiling Proud Wanderer, castration was viewed as something so evil and horrible that anyone who did it to themself would be considered as selling their soul. Here,it is depicted as something that can be laughed at and something that can be forgotten the next day. The princess actually cut EVERYTHING off and left nothing. Of course ,my next question would be what did he do to be wrongfully accused of rape and castrated? Rape during that era was supposed to be something that was very evil and can ruin someone's reputation. His only "crime" was being an idiot, a yes-man and disrespecting Kangxi. Sure, he approved of his father's plan to rebel and didn't do anything to stop Yang Yi Zi from having his arms, legs and tongue cut off and blinded but I blame that on Wu Sangui's direct order. Besides, weren't there even worse characters like Aobai, Wu Sangui or the Dragon Sect(?) leader, others etc more worthy of severe punishments? And still not even they deserve a mutilation and a false rape accusation. Hell, I wouldn't even wish that on my worst enemy. There are other ways to punish someone and btw Wu Sangui got away scott free.
I do make some castration jokes now and then but they are strictly KHBD/Pixie Jian Fa related. The Deer and the Cauldron part however makes a mockery about it's seriousness and downplays such mutilations. And speaking of Aobai and Wu Sangui, wasn't Wu Yingxiong also a real life character who successfully married Jian Ning without incident? So why even include this section in the novel? All in all my respect for Jin Yong had decreased cause I feel he is downplaying false accusations and mutilation. The princess never even got punished in any way but you know what the worse part is? Wei Xiaobao actually does rape(it's not false this time) more than three women and incurred nothing as much as a penalty, punishment or even a scratch on his groin after his rapes;SO WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU?

@machete while some would defend LDJ and say that JY was just trying to turn the hero trope on its head with this anti-hero, unless you treat it like a satire of the whole wuxia genre, there are definitely problematic things about the fic. and i don't know that i buy the "experimental" argument. i mean, granted, GL is so much worse in some ways, but it's clear that he's in for the shock value, so you know you can't take his writing straight-up, as it were (i was going to say "take it seriously", but that's definitely not the intention of the author).
i remember one director wanting to make XLN's rape scene "tasteful" in a recent adaptation. the fact that the adaptation needs to make something palatable raises red flags about why it wasn't treated as absolutely contemptuous by the author. just sayin'.

To be honest, 2/5 into The Deer and the Cauldron and not so much into old TV adaptations, I didn't even know Wu Yingxiong gets castrated. But I have a theory on this. I think JY is never nice to the love rivals of his heroes. Men like Lin Pingzhi, Lao Denuo, Tian Boguang, Wu Dunru, Wu Xiuwen, Song Qingshu are all trash as they are designed to be foils for Linghu Chong, Yang Guo, and Zhang Wuji. Meaning their only plot use is to be as heartless, bird-brained or silly as possible, to put the heroes in the best light. After that, they usually die. With The Deer and the Cauldron, things become more difficult, as Wei Xiaobao is a rogue. But I don't believe JY cares. One look at Liu Yizhou and I know that he's trash, it's the way JY presents him in the book. Zheng Keshuang will be another. So why should Wu Yingxiong be any different? All three had the guts to steal Xiaobao girls and must be heavily punished for that. In Jin Yong universe, only go for leftover women like Li Yuanzhi and Zhou Qi. Be the heroes and pedestrians, not the love rivals.

Whether you suffer more or suffer less, once you become interested in Xiaobao's girls, you will suffer. It doesn't matter who knows them first, or the morality. There is an unwritten golden rule in JY novels: NEVER TOUCH THE HERO'S GIRL. The hero himself can break her heart perfectly well, no one else needs to help. After all, she's *his* girl.
Song Qingshu's good looks and devotion will count for nothing, he must do something truly despicable, or female readers will flock to him like birds. By the end of the novel, his reputation is completely ruined and he got executed. Zhou Zhiruo and JY couldn't even be bothered about him.
Wang Xiaofeng in LCJ suffered a similar fate, well, not castration, but he doubted his girl's chastity. So Shui Sheng got returned like some unopened Amazon merchandise, and Wang, clearly scum again, has to be punished--goes insane after grabbing the poisoned treasure.
In many cases, the hero gets to know the girl later. But does it matter? If so, he is always presented as "liberating" that girl.
My point is how fair or terrible their eventual fates isn't terribly important to JY. They deserve it, coming between the hero and his belle, and let's face it, they are always written as trash. If they did not present themselves as potential love rivals, JY could sometimes forgive them.
LYS in general is not afraid to put antagonists in good light. Prince Dodo is truly devoted to Nalan Minghui, even though Yang Yuncong is the hero. Dodo is far from scum.
I also think LDJ has an element of farce in it. Who knows, Jianning may make WXB suffer even more than she did to WYX. It's entirely because WXB is the hero that he is always granted moral immunity. Maybe WXB even enjoys Jianning's tortures--but I haven't got to that part yet.

I think all you are trying to say is that it is up to JY to decide what happens to other men besides the hero. If that is so, then JY has broken his own "code" even in a self satire. WYX never touched JN or was even interested in her in the first place.
No. WYX doesn't give a damn about Jian Ning even when he found out about the engagement.
Not a good justification for writing such revolting stuff that came after. If WYX was written as trash, then Wu Sangui and the Dragon Sect leader are bigger trash more deserving of a terrible fate.
Nothing she can do(or did,if you had read the whole novel) to WXB after that can compare to having all your genitals cut off forever. Unless she forbid him to ever have sex with his other wives for eternity. But still......

My point is that JY is always harsh to the love rivals of his heroes. Since he's the author, he doesn't need any justifications. The best way to silence readers is by simply writing those men as scum. I think for you, Jianning is obviously a worse person than WYX and I agree. That Jianning can go scot-free doing this kind of genetic mutilation in Jin Yong Universe is what you object to. WYX is of course now truly a eunuch and can serve the emperor in another capacity. Joking aside, I agree that WYX doesn't deserve such fate. But I quite jaded to this as I don't think LDJ is the only novel where I find minor characters being treated unfairly or written as complete trash.
